A campaign to install new floodlighting at Newcastle Rugby Club received a welcome boost thanks a cheque presented jointly by local MP Paul Farrelly and Peter McNestry, Chairman of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust.

They visited the club’s premises in Lilleshall Road, Newcastle, to hand over the cheque, for £24,723, to club president Tony Marsh.

Club officials and volunteers have already raised thousands of pounds to upgrade facilities and the coalfields cash will go towards the £70,000 needed to ensure the ground’s floodlights meet official standards.

Paul said: "I’ve been going to Newcastle Rugby Club since I was a teenager and now, 30 years on, I’m Secretary of the Rugby Union Group in parliament.

"The amateur game depends on volunteers like ours in Newcastle and the support of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust gives a real fillip to all their efforts."
