Newcastle-under-Lyme’s Labour MP Paul Farrelly has confirmed today that he will be contesting the snap election called by the Prime Minister for 8th June.

Perhaps the most crucial Commons vote in Paul's near 16 years in the House took place yesterday evening. Speaking at 8.06pm the previous night, Paul set out the reasons for his intention to vote against the Government's EU Withdrawal Bill after waiting seven and a half hours in the chamber for his turn. So many MPs, naturally, wanted to speak in these two hasty, all-too-short days of debate - forced on a grudging Government by the UK's Supreme Court - that they were only allowed 6 minutes each on this crucial issue for our nation's future. Yesterday, the debate on NHS ‘Sustainability and Transformation Plans’ finally went ahead, on a Labour opposition motion, after being postponed last week. Sadly, deliberately rushed-out Government business truncated it to just three hours, as opposed to six.

In a new report published today on the BBC White Paper, that will form the basis of the BBC’s next eleven year Charter, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee welcomes the decision to abolish the BBC Trust and establish a unitary Board, to consolidate regulation of the BBC in Ofcom and to enhance the role of the National Audit Office in overseeing the BBC accounts.

In a report published today, Tuesday 19 July 2016, the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee says BT is “significantly under-investing” in Openreach, its infrastructure subsidiary. Based on a report commissioned from a panel of independent experts, the Committee concluded the shortfall in investment could potentially be hundreds of millions of pounds a year.
