Cross-party letter calls for Theresa May to rule out No Deal in the event her negotiated deal is rejected.
Well done Caroline Spelman and Jack Dromey, cross-party, for organising this letter signed by 218 MPs who are really concerned about a crash-out, roll the dice, ‘no deal’ exit from our 45 year partnership with our neighbours on the European continent - of which we are still physically part, an Ice Age deluge called the English Channel, notwithstanding.
And hats off, too, to Theresa May - the Prime Minister, as we did not win the last election, or the two before - for attending a packed meeting of well over 100 MPs this evening who’d signed that letter, including myself.
What the PM heard, against cross-party, overwhelmingly was that: her ‘deal’ versus ‘no deal’ was a non-starter. It’s just a recruiting sergeant for ‘no-deal-is-the-best-deal-dealers’ (shut your eyes and think of John Redwood and the stripey blazers, who challenged decent John Major...) and a recipe for trench ‘law-fare’.
So she had to take ‘no deal’ off the menu. And perhaps the vote she lost tonight might, after all, give the PM justification - if the big vote next week is lost - justification for a change of approach. But is she capable of surprises, at all??
If she is, that would be the biggest surprise of all...
