Parliamentary Allowances

Under Freedom of Information legislation, the House of Commons under the previous expenses system was required to publish detailed breakdowns of amounts and receipts in respect of the cost of running MPs' offices, travel, staffing and use of other allowances.

On 21st May 2009, Paul and fellow Labour MPs in North Staffordshire advanced the publication of their Additional Costs Allowance (ACA) - the cause of so much controversy in the Daily Telegraph - to the local media. In addition, Paul also gave to The Sentinel and Radio Stoke details of his ACA costs up to date for 2008/9.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) was created by the Parliamentary Standards Act 2009 and was tasked with bringing independent oversight and control over MPs’ expenses. IPSA regularly publishes details of all MPs’ expense claims.
